My new tower came with a insanely loud whirring fan noise. After five phone calls to Apple, I convinced them that the sound was real and that it wasn't going away. The only thing I could do was keep putting it to sleep to shut the sound down, but on waking up, the sound would be back in a few minutes. The exact day I received the FedEx labels from Apple to send it back, the sound stopped. It's been quiet so far (knock on wood!). It's as if the poor thing knew it was about to be sent back to the lab to be dismantled and tested. I'm glad it decided to stay ;)

That's the same problem I'm having with my MBP! I'm planning to take it in to the Apple Store today, but to my surprise, it's been behaving quite normally. Of course.

Yikes! Hope yours is still behaving normally.

I've since determined that it is the internal fan that's malfunctioning as well. After 105 or so degrees it goes into loudwhine!mode. So all I have to do now is back up my precious original music files and be prepared to spend 5-7 days without it (and be willing to risk them possibly doing a wipe and clean install).

I dragged my IMac back to the apple store (it is heavy when you are schlepping it through the mall) three times before its intermittent power supply problem could be identified! It would not turn on for me, then would fire right up at the store! It cost me a lot of time and created some minor mental health problems for me. They fixed it in the end and I am a happy mac owner in spite of the problem.
